In today’s interconnected world, understanding the strategies that shape major global players' defense and foreign policies is crucial. ȺpÎÞÂë Department of World Languages is hosting a March 26 talk to delve into Russia's national security strategies in the 21st century. With global dynamics evolving rapidly, this presentation aims to provide students with a comprehensive analysis of the historical, geopolitical, and cultural factors influencing Russia’s defense policies.
Scheduled for March 26 during the University Community Hour in AS 158 A, this event will feature an expert in security studies, retired Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Ortega, who will present an in-depth analysis of the historical and contemporary factors shaping Russia’s defense and foreign policy.
Participants will examine how Russia’s experiences, from its imperial history to the Cold War, continue to influence its national security perspective. The presentation will explore how Russia's past—including territorial expansions and its defense against foreign invasions—has informed its current security strategies. This includes the ongoing impact of historical conflicts and territorial disputes.
In addition to historical and geopolitical considerations, the seminar will discuss how Russia’s distinct cultural identity shapes its national security approach. Russia’s Orthodox Christian traditions, Slavic heritage, and enduring resilience against foreign invasions remain influential in the country’s defense philosophy.
The seminar will provide valuable insights into how Russia employs modern cyber capabilities and hybrid military tactics to reach its security goals.
This Arts and Ideas event promises to be engaging and interactive, allowing students to participate in stimulating discussions and a Q&A session. It will significantly benefit international relations, political science, and history students.
